Mafia Island is part of Tanzania’s Mafia Archipelago, in the Indian Ocean. Large swaths of the island’s southern coastline and surrounding waters are protected by the Mafia Island Marine Park. Within the park are many coral reefs, home to wildlife such as whale sharks and sea turtles. In the south, beaches include secluded Ras Kisimani, just across from Bwejuu Island. Popular Utende Beach edges onto Chole Bay.

Tour Plan

1

Day 1

Depart with a Coastal flight from Dar es Salaam to Mafia at 10:45am or 15:00pm. On arrival, you will be met by your lodge driver who will transfer to the lodge. Relax at your accommodation or choose from one of the many extra optional activities available on this unique island. Overnight at your selected accommodation.

Day 2

After breakfast, enjoy your day soaking in the sun at the beach or explore the island. Visit a dive centre or speak with your lodge manager about organizing one of many optional extra activities including: snorkelling or a whale shark excursion. Whale sharks are present on Mafia Island year round but peak seasons to spot and go out swimming with them are November through to February. Check the tides and activities on offer from your lodge on a daily basis. If you’re very lucky you might be there for a turtle nest hatching also! Enjoy your overnight at your chosen accommodation.

Day 3

After a final leisurely breakfast, spend your last morning on Mafia Island, your driver will transfer you back (across the island) to the airstrip. Catch your Coastal flight back to Dar es Salaam at 12:45pm or 17:00pm. Services end.
